How I got started songwriting– When I was about 15 years old, I was reading a magazine one day, something like Dolly or Girlfriend (I’m a girl, I ‘m allowed to read Girly Things). I read the poems that other readers had sent in, and I remember seeing one and thinking how nice it would sound to music.
So I decided I wanted to write a song. I sat down, and just started writing to see what would come out.
Back then, in the era of pop groups, my music followed the same pattern, but I had started. I had no plan that I followed or a structure to my songs, I started to write and once I was done, figured out if what I had, could be turned into a song. Now, I still don’t have it down to a science. I generally come up with either a chorus, title or idea for the song… and go from there. My songwriting tip is though, if it’s hard to write or you struggle to actually get the song out. Stop writing. It’s not the right song.
