To be a songwriter…. Tip #1

So.  How is it that you become a songwriter?  If you look around you, everyone nowdays is a singer, songwriter, composer, rapper or some other artist in the music world.  This can be off putting to some, I mean, if everyone’s a writer, how will you ever make it?   Look at it in this sense, everyone can write, whether it’s good is the question.  There’s a difference between merely writing songs and writing hits.  Songwriting is like anything else, to be good at it, you need to practice.  Whether it’s just writing a new verse everyday, thinking of a new melody or learning how to write about different emotions, it’s a constant necessary evil.  You have to learn and practice being able to convey thoughts and emotions in just a few lines, it’s a lot harder than it looks!

My biggest tip would be, know your language well.  There’s no sense writing a song if you’re using words incorrectly or in the wrong context.  Use a dictionary!  Make sure that what you’re saying makes sense.  Pick a theme for a song (an emotional theme) and make sure that your song hits that area with the right vocabulary and the right emotional feel and you’re much more likely to get the song right.

It’s an old cliche.. but practice really does make perfect!  If you keep working on your abilities, you’re bound to get better.
